If the only icons that come to mind when you hear 'infiniti' are Stephen Hawking or Buzz Lightyear, then you should most definitely read on because the INFINITI QX30 is a crossover model for serious consideration.
Based largely off the Mercedes GLA 250, this model shares the same body, transmission and engine with the highly popular Merc and at around $20,000 less drive away, this somewhat unknown luxury brand is offering a very attractive alternative.
INFINITI is the luxury line of Japanese juggernaut Nissan – a trusted brand in the Australian market known for their durability. So why hasn’t INFINITI taken off like rival brand (and branch of Toyota) Lexus? While both luxury brands were established in 1989, Lexus has been in Australia for 22 years longer than Infiniti, meaning they have a lot of catching up to do in building their brand awareness – particularly in the luxury sector which we Australians take very seriously (particularly those scary soccer mums).
One of their most popular selling models, the QX30, comes in one standard level (with your only upgrade option the paint) and it’s brilliant for someone that isn’t quite sure what they need. The exterior features LED lights, 19-inch alloy wheels and a moon roof, while the interior features a leather finish, heated seats, sat nav, digital radio and loads more.
The safety technology in this car is also impressive with Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) with speed limiter, Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) with distance control, Blind Spot Warning (BSW), front parking sensors, a 360 degree Around View® Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD) and Intelligent Park Assist (IPA). The only thing that I wasn’t a fan of however was the STOP/START fuel saver which I found to be very loud and obvious which did make for tedious city driving.
My other pet peeve was the lack of automatic opening and closing boot which is a must have for me, in a luxury cross-over/SUVs.
The QX30 does however feature a great 4WD system with 3 drive options – Eco, Sport or Manual with steering wheel flappy paddles. Driving in Sport mode resulted in just over 10 litres per 100/kms when I drove, however I was giving it a go most of the time so driving like a nana in Eco mode would certainly be a more fuel efficient approach.
Overall I had a great time driving my first INFINITI. Even my passengers were impressed with the luxury feel inside, and after driving on country roads and in the city I found the drive to be safe, comfortable with with ample power for that every day drive. So if you're considering a small SUV or crossover type car, this might just be the model you didn't know you needed.
